Dr. Schiller’s research is motivated by the possibilities to improve and advance communication and collaboration in today’s highly networked society. Most of her research focuses on computer-mediated communication, virtual teams, digital media, data analytics and visualization, and IT in practice including e-learning. While some of her research has favored positivist quantitative methods, her main research effort now engages mixed-methods and qualitative research. Dr. Schiller is especially fond of activity theory and phenomenology, which have equipped her with new capabilities to understand the many interwoven pieces of our human society.

Her passion for analytics is contagious. At the inaugural TEDxDayton in November 2013, Dr. Schiller gave a talk on how analytics and visualization can be used to tell interesting stories. Between 2013 and 2014, she spent her Professional Development Leave with Teradata working on big data analytics. She believes that scholarly work should improve our insights and provide meaningful and relevant suggestions for actions that can change our lives and the world we live in.

Dr. Schiller’s teaching interests cover various topics on information systems, such as Strategic Information Systems, Data Analytics and Visualization, Business Intelligence and CRM, MIS Senior Capstone Projects, and Introduction to MIS.
